FDA’s current process for evaluating and approving new OTC sunscreen products is extremely slow and burdensome. A new sunscreen ingredient has not been approved in the United States since the 1990s. The PASS Coalition supports the Over-the-Counter Drug Safety, Innovation, and Reform Act (S. 2315), sponsored by Sens. Johnny Isakson (R-GA) and Bob Casey (D-PA), which would provide much needed resources for the FDA’s Office of Nonprescription Drug Products to review new OTC product applications and would streamline the process for considering the safety and efficacy of these drug products, and especially new and pending OTC sunscreen ingredients, to get them to Americans as quickly as possible for the benefit of the public health.
